Hot Water Tank Replacement???

I currently have a 40 gal. power vent hot water tank that is leaking. I priced a new one and its over $750.00. Can I replace it with a normal vent and run vent pipe out the hole the power vent went threw and go up the outside of the house or does the chimney pipe have to run straight up?

NO. If you do not have a properly installed chimney you must use the power vent.

Hot Water Tank Replacement???

House was built in 1975 and didnt have a chimney built in, it must have had an electric hot water tank, then later upgraded by previous home owner. I was told when i bought house it was 2 years old and I've owned 11 years. I thought if I used double wall pipe and went threw basement wall with it and up house it would be alright. Why is it a problem?

Hot Water Tank Replacement???

Becuase it isn't designed to be done that way and you will create carbon monoxide problems in your home. is the savings of $300-$400 worth putting your family at risk? trust us please. spend the extra money and have it done right. You will be better off for it. and to answer your question as to why.. if the vent pipe cools it will not draw the flu gases out and they will back up into yor home. the power vent blows it out so thats not a problem. double wall runniong outside isn't correct.
