hot water tank question?

Hi! I just installed a new hot water tank (with your help, thanks) and I have a couple questions about proper usage. The old tank started leaking around the top blue rim, which I thought was strange. A week before it started leaking, my son had replaced the bottom heating element and had to drain the tank to do so. I'm thinking he may have filled the tank back up too quick with full pressure on the cold water intake and with full pressure and all the air, it was too hard on the inside of the tank which was glass lined. I heard a lot of rattling inside when I removed the old tank. Anyhow I remember when he told me to turn the sink on to get the air out of the lines that it really whomped pretty hard. When I installed the new one I let the tank fill slowly with the cold water valve only about 1/2 on and therefore it didn't build up as much air and when I let the air out of the lines, by turning on the sink, it didn't whomp hard, just hissed. So, now that I have the new one in, I am wondering if you are supposed to have the cold water intake valve all the way on or if you should leave it backed off a little?

The only reason it would have been too hard on the inside of the old tank would be if the tank had almost rusted through and filling it up quick with full pressure was the straw that broke the camel's back.

A new tank can take the full pressure of turning on the shutoff valve fully.
