Question

Hot water tank pipes reversed


I just moved into a home and the hot water tank is hooked up where the the water coming from my well is going into the desiginated hot tube and the cold tube is going to the house.will it cost more to run with it this way?

if the inner tubes were not switched around..it will not work right...

thanks ben I have sold a new technology non chemical water systems for boilers and chillers air coolers,and I have never seen anything like this. will it affect my electric bill?

Iam sure it will because when cold water enters the tank the inlet tube sends it to the bottom pushing hot water out off the top...if not doing that then it is diluting the hot making it colder and needing reheated...

It isnt going to work correctly. Normally, the cold water is directed to the bottom of the tank via an internal pipe called a dip tube. Since the cold water on your system is piped to the hot outlet, the water heater will not operate as designed and yes, it will increase your electric bill (assuming this is an electric water heater). It shouldnt be too difficult to repipe the water heater correctly.

I don't think it will cost more to run it that way, but you'll only get lukewarm water out of it as the cold line (now the outlet pipe) is pulling water from the bottom of the tank where the cold water goes.


In theory, it should use less energy, because you're using mostly cold water.

How much hot water do you get? It is possible the last guy switched sides with the dip tube to match ip with the piping. If you are getting enough hot water then your ok.
