hot water quits when cold water turned on

Does anyone have any idea why the hot water quits whenever the cold water is turned on to make the water warmer. Then we only get cold water.

In a shower? If so, temperature balancing valving likely needs cleaning/replacement.

Check the dip tube on the hot side of your HWT.

Hot water quits when cold water turned on throughout the house. We have a brand new whirpool electric hwt so I don't think it is the dip stick. Any other suggestions?

Wonder if it's the anti-scald valve (if you have one) on your water heater? The anti-scald valve (also called a tempering valve or mixing valve) will probably look like a H connection above your water heater. It connects the cold water line to the hot water line and allows cold water into the hot water line if the hot water temperature is too high. If you have one, maybe try this:

1. If you have insulation on the pipes into and out of your water heater, find a way to feel both pipes a before and after the anti-scald valve. Further away from the tank the better.
2. Have someone turn on a hot water faucet. The hot water pipe should get hotter.
3. Have someone turn on a cold water faucet which stops the hot water flow. -- Does the hot water pipe out from your heater get cooler? If so, maybe your anti-scald valve isn't working properly.
