Hot water pressure problem (unusual situation)

Hello,

Mine is 5Y old house with public water supply in California, 50G gas water heater tank and copper piping. Cold water pressure is very good, but hot water pressure is very low at all points. Flushed the hot water tank, still problem remains.

Did some trial and error method and found a strange situation. Normally, hot water pressure is very low, but hot water pressure increases considerably in first tap, when second tap is on with both hot and cold water mixed. Even observed that hot water in bathrooms increases when cold water is on in the kitchen.

Can some one explain the cause of the problem.

Thanks in advance.

What kind of shut off valve protects the heater---gate valve or ball valve?

Probably some constriction in the hot water piping prior to the tap where you mixed cold and hot. Or maybe in the cold inlet to the water heater.

You are getting improved pressure because the cold water from the hot and cold mixed fixture is backfeeding to the hot water lines and adding to the pressure.

Could be sediment hung up in the piping, just before the cold water inlet shutoff to the water heater is a likely location.

Try this. Turn off all the upstairs faucets but leave the main house water valve and the water heater cold inlet valve open. Open the water heater drain valve. Is this slow also?
