Hot Water Pressure is Low

If hard water, it can close up gate valves, to the point that there is little flow, so you have no choice, but to replace them with ball valves. Easiest ones to use for replacements, are the shark bites. Compression type valves, you need to not over tighten the nut, to cause the Copper piping to collapse.

If an old house that still has galvanized Potable water piping, those pipes rust from the inside out, and tend to also close up more easily than Copper, from hard water deposits.

Check with your local University, farm bureau, or even Culligan Water can give you a report of the hardness of your water. Your utility that you get water from, might also be able to tell you the hardness of your water, if you contact them, and ask for a report, if they do not send one out yearly, or have available on their website.

If your old valves are gate valves, as already stated, they can be clogged, and causing the low flow. Ball Valves do not have the symptomatic problems, that gate valves have, when open, so no way for crud to catch on a lip, like gate valves are constructed inside.

Should I take a picture of my valves for you? I don't have galvanized piping by the way. I don't know if that's important or not...I just hope it's not under the slab.

How about calling a real plumber? Nothing against Grandpa, of course.

Probably is not a big deal. I would not worry, you will adjust to cold showers.LoL. I second the valve problem. Please take a picture or two of the copper pipes on the top of the water heater. Take a close up of any valve looking thing with a handle you can turn. What I am thinking is you and your Grand Father can shut the water off and take the handle part off of the valve and maybe clean the inside of the valve to remove the junk inside the pipe.

What you are showing is not a Gate Valve, Greg. It is what used to be called a ball valve.

In a Gate Valve A wedged shaped Gate drops straight down like the gate of a castle. It is a straight through valve like a modern ball valve.

Does it really matter. At this point it is semantics, and the two posted that I linked, are the common ones found in the home. Go to any big box, and look on the labels, what does it state for the two items that match what I posted cut-aways of?

Again, Gate valve http://www.lowes.com/Search=gate+val...Ntt=gate+valve

Ball Valve http://www.lowes.com/Search=ball+val...Ntt=ball+valve

Any more questions class?
