Hot water mixing valve

I need to change one of these, do these valves vary in size, would i beable to just unscrew the old or is there some plumbing involved, and is there any reason to turn the hot water tank off.

They're all different. Can you put up some pictures?

Looks like they are all unions to me. Your lucky. Should be able to unscrew old one (ccw) screw on new one. Use 2 big wrenches or channel locks just in case they are tight. Even though u will have water off and faucet open, there still will be some water that will come out, just be prepared for that. Have some rags, bucket or towels ready. Let's see what the pro's say.

i just hoping the new mixing valve is close to the old and the distance between the unions will work, or i will have to cut some pipe.. the two copper pipes coming out of the heater are fixed, i dont think i will get much movement.

Should be a name on that valve some place.
Looks like a Honeywell.

Exactly, I c what u mean. Hopefully u can find one the same size as that one. If not, some plumbing maybe required to make new one fit. U should have a little play there, but it doesn't look like a lot. Like Joe recommends above, c if there is a name or number on old one - go from there.
