Quick question. Some guy at the local hardware store told me that hot water heaters require double wall b vent I told him not true as mine and others I have seen are single wall galvanized. Any opinions?

It depends on the installation of the tank. If you are tying into an existing chimney no. If you are adding an entire chimney for the tank the part that enters the framing of the house will need to be double wall. This is for fire reasons.

Its an existing chimney. When you have a direct vent pipe for a gas fireplace the square piece of flashing that is against the wall with the pipe running through the middle of it. Is that for fire purposes as well? To keep away from combustibles, i.e. the wall.

Basically the flue gets hot and drys out the wood. Eventually it will cause combustion.

That usually pisses of your insurance company....
