Hot water heater leak?

Hi,

I have an AO Smith 75-gal hot water heater (FGR 75 232 model) that was installed almost 6 years ago. Recently I started to notice a few small trails of water flowing out from the tank opening for the inlet dip tube. The water trails are very small.. and evaporated by the time they get to the bottom of the tank. I also noticed quite a bit of standing water from the tank openings for the hot water outlet along with the inlet dip tube. Is this just normal condensation of the water heater should I worry about having it replaced soon? Thanks much in advance.

If I understand you right, and it's leaking around the dip tube the way I imagine, it sounds more like a fitting leaking than the tank itself. Take apart the union above the cold side, (you DO have a union hopefully...right?), take the fitting out of the tank, retape/pipe dope and reinstall. If that's not it, and as much as 75 gallon tanks are, I would try to find a pan to put under the WH and plumb it to a drain. Try to get as much time as possible out of this WH, as long as the leak was slow and wasn't costing more in water than it's worth. You would have to make that call on a day-by-day basis.
