Hooking New Bath into Sewer Pipe

I am installing a new half bath in my basement. It is directly below my main floor bath (1 bathroom house), which is the main vent stack. I am going to be running the toilet drain into the main sewer drain, right near the main stack.

My question is, what is the code as far as distance from the main stack that I can "Y" into the main sewer drain? I have heard 10 pipe diameters from the base of the main stack. If this is correct, is it 10 stack pipe diameters, or 10 sewere pipe diameters? My stack is 3" cast iron pipe, and my main sewer pipe is 4" cast iron pipe. If this is not correct, what is the proper distance?

I hope that explains it enough. If not, let me know. TIA for any input.

BTW, my city has adoped the 2000 Michigan plumbing code.

UPC code does not specify, so as close as you wish, no set distance.

Well, that's good to hear. Thanks for the quick reply. :)

Just to follow up, I did contact the city, and I'm not sure if it is a MI requirement, or a city requirement, but the inspector told me a minimum 10 pipe diameters (of the stack pipe) from the stack.

Then do as they say.
