Hi everyone! I'm new here! New home w/ Well & Septic & I have questions!
I'm about to purchase a home and wanted to know your thoughts on the plumbing system. I'm not exactly sure the entire layout of it (yet, still waiting on specs) but I do know it is well water, septic system, and a hydro air system (which I think also heats the water?)
Anyways - this is a new-construction house. My concern is the well - it's a 600ft deep well, pump is submersible 1hp at 500ft. Puts out 8GPM. Well can hold roughly 700 gallons and has a yield of 2.5 to 3 GPM.
Is this sufficient? To me it sounds awfully low, especially considering the fact that I will have almost two acres of property that I need to water.
Also, wanted to know about the viability of using a garbage disposal with the septic system, if I used it only sparsely for very easily biodegradable foods (liquids, bread, fruit, etc. ) Not like whole plates of spaghetti or anything.
Oh, and also, there are no water filters right now on the system. I have test reports that have the following info:
pH - 7.3
Color - 10
Odor - 1
Turbidity - 1.9
Iron - .27
Hardness - 13
Sodium - 3.3
Chloride - 2.0
Sulfate - 7.0
Are these acceptable numbers?
I just don't want to get into a situatiion wher I am constantly running out of water. I will have a low-water usage dishwasher and washing machine in the house. Wife and I don't have kids yet so it's just the two of us but we do hope to have 2-3 kids in the next 5-10 years.
Thanks so much! I'm sure I'll be spending much more time here as I get adjusted to home ownership!
On a side note, you'll need to run out and buy an emergency back up generator. Hopefully you have a gas line and won't have to buy the propane tanks. Without them, if you lose power, you have no water and thus can't wash or use the toilet. Also, watering your 2 acre lawn with well water is a total waste. You need to come up with some sort of landscape plan that will allow you to capture rainwater off your gutters. I think it costs about $10/ft to drill deeper. Could be more.
...a garbage disposal with the septic system
Sounds like a nice place you have there in the country, I'm jealous >_<
Regarding the garbage disposal, you can purchase a garbage disposal specially designed for use with a septic system. Insinkerator has been around forever, and they have a good warranty on their stuff. Go to http://www.mygarbagedisposal.com and then to the Garbage Disposals. The second page has the Evolution Septic Assist. That's the one to get. I have had one for years and it's worked flawlessly.
Good luck on your new home!
regarding your water test results. according to my limited research and knowledge ... ph is fine but the rest isn't so hot. I'd do a full treatment system. My tests came out better than yours and I'm putting in a system. I went to cleanmywater.com and found what I wanted at the price I wanted. I'll install it myself. I took 2 water samples at the same time and sent one to them and the other to Texas A&M for eval ... results were the same from both. (one diff ... hardness = 10 from one and 11 from the other) close enough. Local folks wanted way too much $$.
