Help! Water Heater Pilot Light

Hi Everyone, I'm at my witts end with my water heater. I have Bradford White Model: MI5036FCX2 gas water heater. The pilot light constantly goes out. I have replaced the thermostat and thermocouple. There is a little button/switch that has to be reset everytime the pilot light goes. Could the button be the problem? Right now the only thing I can figure out is since it is in my attic, the summers down here in south east texas are just too hot for it? It seems that this only happens in the summer. Its gotten to the point that I have to relight it every morning so my family can take showers. Please help.

As the WH seems to have no trouble re-lighting and staying on in *some* circumstances I'll suggest that you look outside of the heater itself for a cause.

The most obvious thing is outside air coming down the flue pipe.
If it doesn't have a cap... this $10 fix might just do it.

Help! Water Heater Pilot Light

Hi HTH, thank you for the advise. When I got home tonight I looked at the vent and it looks like everything is ok.

So much for the cheap & easy fix... huh?

Well, I'm sticking with the notion that something external to the WH and it's controls is making the pilot go/blow out rather than it just doing so all on it's own (after having been on all day long with no problems).

Look around for something that is changing the air flow in the area.
Is there an attic exhaust fan that comes on? Something...

possibly due to an over heating condition. The overheating condition must be determined prior to putting the heater back in service.

1. Verify adequate combustion air supply is available.
2. Clear jacket slot openings of any dirt, dust, restrictions or other obstructions.
3. Inspect flame arrestor plate and clean with stiff brush and/or vacuum to remove scale deposits and debris.

PROBABLE CAUSE
Insufficient

2. Incorrect switch.
