help turning on gas

http://wtfisgmail.com/stuff/dsc06939.jpg

The gas line comes in from the bottom
there is a valve
then there is a saucer like attachment - what is that?
there is another valve before the meter
(valves open on water heater)

I turned the rectangle valves near the meter every which way but I get nothing - Which leads me to my next question which way closes the valve? Right? I confuse myself thinking it's backwards.

I'm under the impression the gas is on from the street. I suppose I should double check that.

Thanks!

help turning on gas

Remember this--in line is ON.

The bottom valve is 'in line' so it is on. The disk like thing is a presure regulator. The upper valve I can not see well enough to know if it is 'In line' with the pipe or not.

Good luck--Mike--

help turning on gas

How, why and when did the gas get turned off? If you acquired this property and the gas was already off it may be that the gas company has the gas turned off. Maybe it was shut off by the gas company when previous owner didn't pay bills or maybe they felt the gas lines/appliances were unsafe.

I'm on propane and if I need the gas turned off for some reason the propane company wants to be the one who turns it back on and fires up the furnace for the first time. Your natural gas company might have similar requirements. Have you talked to them?

There should be a valve in the street on your line after it tee's off the street main. Look for a cover plate labled "Gas Valve" somewhere outside along the curb line.
