Help!! Sump pump won't stop running!

The sump pump performed like a champ during Sandy this week but I'm afraid it might have given it's all. I heard water "running" into it this morning as well as a weird whine/moan sound so I went to check it out and there was no water running into it anymore but it was running non-stop anyway. I looked to see if the ball was stuck in a high position but I don't think it was and whenever I plug it in it just immediately started running and sloshing around the tiny bit of water that's just sitting at the bottom. Any ideas? Do I need to replace her? Is it easy? I've done a few installs of stuff (dishwasher being the most complicated probably) but I would need to get this done quickly since we're supposed to leave Thurs morning for a trip (i.e. no running back and forth to Home Depot a hundred times for parts like I usually end up doing...)

The current pump is a Zoeller or whatever it's called that sites entirely in the hole and has a white floater. When I raise or lower the floater nothing changes.

I'm attaching a pic in case it's of any use. Thanks!!

The switch is shot----

Zohler makes a darn good pump but the switches are no easily replaced---

Installing a new pump is really an easy task----

You need a new pump----a male 1 1/2" fitting to thread into the outlet hole on the new pump (open the box in the store and make sure you choose the right size----

Also-a length of 1 1/2" PVC and primer and PVC cement--

A new back flow valve is a wise idea----

Thread the fitting into the outlet----prime and cement the pipe into the fitting---twisting as you push them together--hold them together for 30 seconds or so===

Un do the old back flow valve and remove the old pump-----clean up the pit---place new pump back unto the pit

position it so the float can not hit the wall and the new pipe lines up with the old---add your new check valve if you are to replace it--cut new pipe to length----attach it to the check valve---done---

I left out the lid ---but you sound smart enough to figure that out on your own---Mike---

I've done a few---

"Gee--that only took fifteen minutes! How come you charge so much?"

"Well, I charge a lot less if you bring the pit and pump to my shop, sir."

Thanks for the detailed response. I'm at work now but I'll see if my wife can send me a pic of the pipe. I'm hoping that I can just reuse the piping that's already there and just tighten up a new fastener around it (since the one there is pretty rusty.) Any chance that it would be that simple?

Often the threaded fitting is either stuck or brittle and might break (or a different size)----the PVC fittings are only a dollar or two---

I always replace that pipe coming off the pump----using a rubber Fernco coupling to join the old to the new is an acceptable way of doing the install---and is as simple as cutting the new riser to match the old pipe---and connecting the two with the rubber coupling and two hose clamps---

Is the green thing at the top a check valve? I found a guy to sell me a new pump and he was asking if I had a check valve. Looking at pics online I'm wondering if that's it.

That's what I was thinking. There's nothing like it on any pics of Zoeller sump pumps on the Zoeller site...

That definately looks like a check valve in the picture. They're typically just clamped on to the pipe coming out of the pump, making it rather simple to repair.

Before you change out the pump though, are you positive that the float just isn't getting stuck on the guide??

Pretty sure. I tried manipulating the float a lot of different ways. Is there some other thing that we should try?

Then of course there is the cost of them screwing stuff up, and also attempting to help you when you run to the truck for something.

Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?

You asked if there was another way of trying to make the switch work.

A well placed tap of encouragement to the top of the case where the float lever goes in might help. Even if it does make the pump go off, I'd still replace the pump, because the next time it fails might be in the OFF position.
