Help with low pressure cold water upstairs
My cold water upsatirs is just trickling out the taps! This happened yesterday. When using the shower it ran out of hot water (not uncommon as its a power shower and was used after the kids had had a bath etc...) The shower was delivering hardly any water and the pump for the shower was going crazy, so I turned the shower off and put the immersion on to heat up some more water.
Since then the cold water coming out the taps upstairs is just a dribble, although the shower is now fine and the downstairs cold water pressure is excellent.

I am not sure what it may be, but my thoughts are around maybe some air got into the system (but would that effect downstairs as well) when the shower went mad. Or maybe some debirs has got into the pipes somehow.

I have looked at the cold water tank today and its full and seems clean from any debris etc... (Even had my arm in there to check no blockage on the cold water feed out of the tank to the cold water system). The cold water tank looks fine and seems to fill ok, ballcock is ok etc..( although maybe a little slow. Its a 50 gallon/227 litre tank with lid and vent pipe and so on.

Any ideas what it may be - and why the downstairs is not effected (could just be graivty I suppose, or maybe all my downstairs cold is fed from the rising main and not the tank??)

Thank you,

Is this one of more faucets your have trouble with, what faucets are giving you trouble?

Try removing the areators on the taps, and see if the water flows good then, if they do, clean out the areators

Hi Ron,
It is all the upstairs taps and the toilets are upstairs are very slow filling up too. I have 3 cold water taps upstairs (bath , sink in bathroom and sink in en-suite) and 2 toilets.

I will have a try at the aerators and see if that helps. We do have hard water here so maybe they are clogged up.

Thanks Ron

Do you have copper pipe going to the upstairs fixtures?

lewissv 01-26-2007 08:02 AM

Yes its all copper pipe - 15mm for the sinks and 22mm for the bath. I think it must just be an air block - its very strange that the downstairs is not effected and there is no pumps or anything else on the pipes. It just copper pipe from Cold Water Tank in loft to the various taps etc...
Nothing complicated, but just not working!.

Your plumbing is different then here in the states, I wish I knew more about how it all works over there.
