Help deciding location for washer dryer

Looking for some opinions on possibly placing my washer and dryer in an upstairs location. For some context, we have one of the old Sears Roebuck catalog homes in mid western Wisconsin, built in 1948. It's a two story with a block basement, which is the current home of our washer and dryer.

Here is a quick visio diagram of the upstairs of my house, and in orange is the proposed location for the washer and dryer built into the knee wall.

It's a pita for my wife to haul the laundry up three flights of stairs from the basement to the second floor where the bedrooms are, so we are contemplating moving the washer and drying closer to the clothing.

In the upstairs we have one very large bedroom that we call the "master", which has a small bonus room that acts as a walk in closet right now. We are thinking of building a cavity into the knee wall surrounding the bonus room to place the washer and dryer. My concern is that we wil have the machines literally in our bedroom, albiet behind a door, which could be noisy if running at night. Also concerning is that this will sit directly above our living room, and I am not sure how noisy it would be while running.

Any thoughts or previous experiences with this sort of project?

Help deciding location for washer dryer

Call a few plumbers and let them tell you best place to put it so that it will work and not have to reinvent the wheel.

location considerations:
allow running the floor drain outside the easiest
allow running the dryer vent outside the easiest
allow getting the 2" drain pipe (and vent!) installed easiest
allow getting the H&C water pipes installed easiest
allow getting the gas pipe (or 240V wire) installed easiest

you won't be able to meet all those desires.
hth

ps: with all that going on you might think about a 3/4 bathroom too.

As well as the mechanical considerations that Tarheel mentioned, you need to assess the structural aspects; 600 pounds or so vibrating over the center of a 60 year old living room ceiling may not prove to be a good thing.

Great advice, and from the list of things (most I hadn't even considered, like a floor drain) it sounds like a pretty bad idea to put it where I was thinking. On the back side of the house (bottom part of the diagram) we had considered building a dormer and putting in a master bathroom above the downstairs bathroom, where all the plumbing could be easily routed, which now sounds like the most logical place to do something like this.

Help deciding location for washer dryer

I have my washer/dryer on the second level of a 3 year old house...I assumed they braced the floor properly, well they didn't and my whole house shakes when washing clothes. The one difference is my is located in the middle of the upstairs, and yours is closer to an exterior wall. I would not recommend it unless you take the pre-cautions of not wanting the whole house shaking.
