which heats water more efficiently?

We will need a 50 gal. water heater. I have available a 220 volt source and natural gas. Which of these types heat water the most efficiently? I hate the thought of having to vent a gas heater out to the top of the roof.

Natural gas will without a doubt be the cheapest way to heat water.

Next option, look into some of the new heat pump water heaters. They basically work just like a standard heat pump....but have issues if your in a cold climate.

Nice thing about gas....it works if there is a power outage.

The question is more efficient or quicker or cheaper to operate.
Electric is nearly 100% efficient. No heat is going out the chimney.
Gas might be quicker and works during a power outage if you don't have one of the high efficiency units that requires a draft blower to be running.
