having trouble getting a tub spout back on
Yesterday I removed a bathtub spout because there was a gap between the spout and the wall and I wanted to clean it up and reapply the silicone chalk. I applied silicone tape to the copper and have not been able to get the spout back on. This spout dates back to 1980 and is the screw on type. I also went to Home Depot and bought a new spout but can't get it on either. Any ideas?

do you mean Teflon tape (or PTFE, same thing)?

how many wraps of tape did you put on? If you applied too much, it could be that you simply cannot get the pipe end to fit into the spout far enough to get a thread started.

Twice around "with tension" on the tape.

Yes, with teflon tape.

well, it's not too much but...

try removing the tape and trying the spout. If you can get it on without any tape, you just aren't getting a thread to catch. After you reapply the tape, when trying to install it, push inward with force as you turn the spout.
