Gate valve removed.....

In my county in CA, the powers that be decided, to help save water they were installing water meters at every residence.
Okay, got to go with the flow!!

Because I bought a track home and they only give us so many hose bibs, I decided to run a line from the front of my home to the back yard for future irrigation. I had contacted the county at this time and they said I owned anything after the service valve at the street. I teed off the main line to my home at the street and ran an 1.25" pvc line to my backyard. I place a gate valve on the new line after the tee.
When the contractor for the county came out and installed the water meter, unknown by me they removed my gate valve and now to shut off the water to the backyard, I would have to shut off the house also. Other than space is there any code that says I can't place an isolation valve to the irrigation line after the service valve???

Move the line to the house. Unless there was a Backflow preventer in there, and the fact that Cali is nazi's when it comes to water conservation, I would agree with the contractor that they had every right to remove the illegal connection.

What code gives them that right? The hose bib that is attached on the other end is back flow protected.

A device connected in their portion of the service. Why not ask them what their rules are, rather than guessing. But as I stated before, if I had to give a fair guess, illegal hookup, due to no backflow preventor at the connection point you made.

Also never use a gate or globe valve if you ever plan on shutting it off totaly in the future.
Use a ball valve instead.

I think they're being ripped off. I can predict the weather in Phoenix far into the future with 99% accuracy. Hot with no rain. Most of the rain you receive in Phoenix comes from monsoon thunder showers which are very hit and miss. The weather at the airport is a vastly different micro-climate from North Phoenix or East Valley. I think Internet based weather controls are a gimmick. They should be investing in real technology like ground moisture meters and grey water systems.

I will note that I have heard of the company and it has a good reputation for using low water consumption and native species.

One other thing why did you hijack this thread. It doesn't deal with Arizona.

At one of my complexes here we have a system that as along as the system is set up properly it will notice when there is a broken head, shut down that valve and move to the next one. Thing is the company went chapter 7 and the setup was never done and yes that seems like a expensive waste!
