I'm would like to move my gas water heater from its present location to 1) free up some space on my furnace return side so I can install a humidifier (water heater is currently in the way) & 2) shorten the semi-horizontal exhaust run, it's currently a few feet.
The new location I have in mind is near a basement window. It's a "standard" basement lookout window, not an egress, approx 12" x 26".
Are there any code concerns with installing a water heater near a basement lookout window? Space clearances around the appliance can be met & it will be vented into the same stack (goes to the roof) as it is currently. I want to make certain there isn't some obscure requirement out there about this (I don't live in CA, so that should eliminate most of the obscure rules ).
No, there's nothing that would prohibit the installation of a water heater in front of a window.
Honestly, as stupid as it is, the IRC code does not require any clear space on the interior side of an egress window...So you could place it there and not violate the code one bit...Although it violates the intent of the code.
