gas water heater too hot

hello everyone -- help!!
I have installed 2 replacement thermostats on a new gas water heater, 40 gallon, under warranty, because the temp. is scalding. The manufacturer gladly sends a new one (as if they know something is wrong) but all 3 give very hot water...... even on vacation setting. (The thermostats are Robert-Shaw, seem to be good quality,) the propane gas pressure is ok...

At this point it is unlikely that it is the 'stat.

The temp. sensor is bad (unless each new 'stat has one)?

I guess the gas valve could be sluggish when it is shutting off (a weak return spring?).

You need to ask them what is the temp. differential between gas on and gas off for a working 'stat and what temps. the dial markings correspond to, including the vacation setting.

I'm surprised they are not afraid of a lawsuit.

Did you make sure you told them the part was for propane? Make sure the water heater is for LP and not natural gas.

Did you replace a rod-like assembly that screws into the tank? The box with the dial mounted outside the tank? Both?

When you take the rod sensor out of the tank you would make sure it is clean.
