Gas water heater flue question....

Hi everyone,

I recently installed a new water heater, but in order to complete the installation, I have to run a new flue. How much vertical rise off the draft hood do I need before I transition it into a 45 deg. elbow? I can't use a wye to just tie it into the furnace flue because there's an 18" return duct in the way.
