Garbage in Toilet

My wife (and our kids) toss garbage in the toilets. I'm frustrated because I'll walk in the bathroom and see lipstick tubes in the bowl, or floss, or wrappers. Doesn't this catch up with eventually?

They seem to have this idea that its "free disposal" to just flush this stuff. That's not true is it?

It will catch up with you eventually. It's called a main sewer snake.
I would suggest some in depth training on trash cans and how to use them. They make nice little ones for bathrooms...

The only thing a plumbing system is designed for is human waste and toilet paper. No other paper products.. Perhaps a garbage disposal for minor plate wash off.

If your on a septic system this bad habit can range in a cost of 25 grand when you replace it.

In these parts a main sewer snake can cost you 300 to 600 dollars depending on how long it takes.

Get your wallet out--this will catch up with you----

Place a jar on the toilet and label it " Plumber's fund" ---

Seriously---break them of that habit--get a pair of junk kitchen tongs and make the person that does that fish out the garbage---

I'm shaking my head-----Mike----

Well, this bad behavior is NOT free. Your clan helps keep the waste water treatment costs higher for everyone else... and makes extra work for treatment plant workers who have to deal with this crap fouling their pre-filters.

Okay, so the bottom line is that we've gotta stop doing this.

Here's my confession. I throw floss in there every night. Is that okay?

Garbage in Toilet

Here is an excerpt from wikipedia that describes the process to remove this stuff from wastewater. In all cases there is a cost to do this but note that in plants serving smaller areas (I am guessing that is you) it is done manually. Please, please break your family of this absurd behavior.

Screening
The influent sewage water passes through a bar screen to remove all large objects like cans, rags, sticks, plastic packets etc. carried in the sewage stream.[6] This is most commonly done with an automated mechanically raked bar screen in modern plants serving large populations, whilst in smaller or less modern plants, a manually cleaned screen may be used. The raking action of a mechanical bar screen is typically paced according to the accumulation on the bar screens and/or flow rate. The solids are collected and later disposed in a landfill, or incinerated. Bar screens or mesh screens of varying sizes may be used to optimize solids removal. If gross solids are not removed, they become entrained in pipes and moving parts of the treatment plant, and can cause substantial damage and inefficiency in the process.

I wonder if your dad and my dad were brothers?

To the OP....I wonder if you were to put a trash can next to the toilet....and put the lid down on the toilet...would they use that?

Bottom line....the toilet is NOT intended for anything other than human waste....

I know from personal experience that plastic frogs do not flush well. I'm sure the other 'plastic' items are just about as bad.
