My garbage disposal hums and I cannot seem to get the flywheel free with the broom handle trick. I've done it before but this time, it seems permanently stuck.
It's about 10 years old, is this a sign that I need to replace it? If so, how difficult is it to replace by someone not terribly handy? Thanks!
Get a mirror and look at the bottom side of the disposal. Our disposal has a hex socket where an Allen wrench can be inserted. If there is a hex socket, your disposal should have come with a large Allen wrench that's about 5 or 6 inches long. Insert the Allen wrench in that hex socket and work it back & forth to try to free it up. If you get to the point of fix or replace, try hitting the Allen wrench with a hammer in both directions.
