I have a friend who bought a house mid-renovation because they wanted the place (a great 1890s Chicago greystone) but the contractor was doing a terrible job at it. How terrible? Well, they've been bringing in better people to do (and re-do) the work and yesterday my friend came up to me and said, "We've got the most luxurious house ever! Three words, my friend: Hot Water Toilets."

There is a plumbing theory that hot water to a toilet helps keep it cleaner, and the water going into the tank will not cause condensation as it will not be so much cooler than the ambient room temperature(s). BUT: Think about this--when you flush a toilet you will not get enough water volume to travel through the HOT water piping to bring in HOT, or even warm, water to the toilet. That is unless your water heater is very close to the toilet. My theory: Is that you will bring some HOT water from the water heater into the piping system, but not all the way to the toilet. Then this amount of water will sit within your piping and become the same as the ambient temperature around it. Therefore: you just lost some of your heated water and the energy you used to heat it.

in my 20 years as a plumber i had to fix a few jobs where the guys ran hot water to a toilet. the problem is you take a toilet which is usually at fairly cool tempurature and run hot water into it and knowing how when things get hot they expand, porcelain doesnt expand like that and tho ive never seen it happen i was told that the toilet would shatter. on the other hand we also used to install tempering valves on the line to the toilet and it fed a small amount of hot water in with the cold water to keep the tanks from sweating in the summer time. warm water might be ok and they do have toilets now with heat, air drying and built in bidet sprayers and even heated seats. im glad im not a plumber anymore. i would like a heated seat tho

He could be referring to Professor Arthur Friend from the University of Washington, who is currently away in Nepal.
