Foul odor in bathroom sink

Hello! There is a foul odor coming from our bathroom sink. It happens when I first turn on the water and after a few seconds it goes away. I have had 2 plumbers come out - one said it was the water heater and I needed to replace it. The second plumber said it was just dirty pipes and to pour Drainright down the sink and let it sit overnight. I did that and that didn't work either. I have read DIY posts on the same issue and those make more sense, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

First turn on the hot water and pour it into a container. Don't let any water go into the drain.

Turn hot off.

Turn on cold water and pour that into another container. Don't let any water go into the drain. Turn that off.

Take both containers outside the room. Remember which is hot, which is cold.

Now smell both containers. Does either smell?

And go back into the bathroom and smell the drain. Does it smell?

That will pinpoint where the problem is coming from.

Is there a p-trap under sink??? If there is to see if its working put stopper in sink and cover drain vent with tape see if smell goes away.

I'm not a professional., But I did stay at Holiday Inn Express last night.

if the sink has an overflow in it (a outlet usually nesr the top oinside of the bowl. when the sink fills it prevents the water from overflowing onto the floor. soap and water over time will foul the inside of the overflow and emit an odor. Try usung a bottle brush with a degreesing agent. use safety glasses . Just a thought
