Flushing a HWH

new topic

Browsing HWH's in a big box store a clerk told me to hook a hose up to the bottom of the HWH, (every 6 mths) then turn the HWH knob off to stop water going in...........then to turn on a hot water faucet in a sink.

He said to run the hose outside and flush out the tank for 3 minutes.

I've never heard of this before but I know we have bad water here. By bad I mean, if any water stands in the bathroom sink it leaves black marks.

My question is: do the plumbers on here recommend this flushing?

I recommend doing all the manufacturer suggested maintence as per your HWT manual including flushing the tank and anode inspection/replacement. That said, don't shut off tank water supply and open faucet, just hook up hose and drain a gallon or so with the tank pressurized.

The purpose of draining a gallon or two of water from the hot water tank is to flush out particulate matter such as grains of sand or bits of rust that came in from the water main.

If you wait too long, enough of this sediment can accumulate on the bottom that the drain valve doesn't let any water out. Then getting the sediment out gets more complicated.

A lot of sediment on the bottom makes gas water heaters take longer to heat up a tankful of water and can also shorten the life of the tank because the bottom surface gets hotter and may break the glass lining.
The good conscientious technician or serviceperson will carry extra oils and lubricants in case the new pump did not come with oil or the oil was accidentally spilled, so the service call can be completed without an extra visit.
