Flex line from black pipe to appliance

Should these connections from black pipe to flex line and flex line to appliance be doped or is it special (compression fitting?) and doesn't require dope or tape?

Ron The Plumber 02-20-2008 07:24 PM

It's a ground joint, no dope needed.

There you go again, Ron ole buddy. Ruining all of my "silicone and duct tape" plumbing advice. LOL

Ron The Plumber 02-20-2008 07:39 PM

I do my best Mike.

OK. No dope on either end of the flex line on the connections to my new gas water heater and range. I hope I don't blow up my house. Thanks Ron. And thanks Mike (sort of).

Hopefully, with the addition of new gas appliances you've sprung for new gas flex lines, right? Read the directions - use no pipe dope.

Oh, the directions. I'll try that. I haven't bought the flex lines yet. If they come with install instructions that will be my bible. Thanks.

Clean, clean and clean. Those are the three rules of putting a flared joint together, which is the type of ground metal joint you're putting together.

Do use two wrenches, one to tighten with and one as a backup to prevent something turning that you don't want to turn. Sometimes regulators are attached to appliances inside where we can't see them on flimsy brackets that bend easily.
