Flapper adjustment

How do I know if my flapper is adjusted right? Should it close before the bowl flushes? How much water should be left in the tank when it closes?

I'm using a brand new Fluidmaster 400AK complete rebuild kit with the red flapper with an adjustable dial from 1-9(9 being max and that's where it's set).

Flapper adjustment

if its double flushing, it's letting too much water thru. if it's not then it's ok

Flapper adjustment

It may require some trial and error adjusting the dial on the flapper and observing the results over a few days.

Strategy 1. Adjust the dial so the maximum amount of water is left behind in the tank when the flapper closes but the toilet still flushes reliably.

Strategy 2. Put some food coloring in the bowl. Adjust the dial so the coloring is consistently eliminated during the flush.
