Finding Sewer Line Under Concrete In Basement

I want to put a shower in the powder room in my basement. See Photo.

The wasteline/stack is in the chase in the righthand corner next to the toilet.
This is currently a very small space that I will expand for a shower. My questions are:

Is there any way I can I locate the wasteline under the slab BEFORE I take a jackhammer to the slab?

If not, what is the safest way to proceed?

If I remove the toilet can I safely just put a rag in the pipe?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

I was in the same boat as you and ended up hiring the cheapest plumber with a cam i could find. I think it cost me around $175. He has a cam he shoves down and then waves a sensor over the top. I needed to know where a Y was further downstream.

You could take that lovely toilet off and see which way the pipe heads once it turns horizontal and shove a wire down to see where it hits the main drain. Pull the wire out and replicate that spot on the basement floor. From that spot draw a straight line from where the stack goes into the floor.

Forget about using coat hangars and witching the pipes. Waste of time.

I'll bet you the flange 90's toward the stack or back wall and you will have a hard time finding a spot to put a 4x2 wye for the shower..

Can I confirm your suspicion by pulling the toilet which I am going to replace anyway?

Pull the toilet like Beepster said and see which way the 90 turns. If its an older house with cast iron, chances are good that they took the shortest route to the base of the stack and then outside. I'm assuming your drain exits the house near the stack too.

Actually the stack is on the back wall of the house and the waste line runs some 75 feet under the basement slab and front yard to the street.
