Finding a Crack in a Fiberglass Bathtub
Hello everyone. New to the forum, thanks in advance for any guidance.

My ceiling has been leaking under my one piece shower/tub (fiberglass) when my little son takes a bath.

I had the plumber in today. Ive been told that I have a crack in the tub.
He changed out the drain and any gaskets and cut a hole in the ceiling. He is very confident (as am i ) that its not the plumbing.

The water, now that the ceiling is open, is coming from the middle of the tube somewhere, pooling on the floorboard, and flowing down to the ceiling near wear the drain was cut out.

We went upstairs and we cannot see any crack in the tub. I stood in it as he looked and we still couldnt locate it.

Is there a method to finding a crack...kinda like a a hole in a tire...that i dont know about it.

Thanks... Im really stuck here.

Add red food coloring to the water so it shows up better.
Are you 100% sure it's not leaking over where the plumbing itsor behind the covers where the knobs are.
Also look along the floor where the tub sits for missing caulking.

does it leak when anybody else takes a bath or just when your son bathes?

now that the ceiling is open I can see it leaks with baths or showers, not just when he's in there. it's pooling on the subfloor under the tub then leaking down the cutout to the ceiling.

from process of elimination, a crack in the tub seems like an obvious culprit right?

let everything dry and then fill the tub with water and see where the water comes from.

thanks Danny but I can't see under the tub. no access. cant get my head up there. I'd need some sort of camera or scope.

Harbor freight has a small camera with about 3' of flexible lead between the camera and hand held monitor
