Faucets from the big box stores

Years back I swear I read an article about not buying certain things, like door locks and faucets from the big box stores. The article said that they had special SKUs for the products that were made cheaper (it went so far as to say they bought two identical named locksets from the HD and another specialty store, put them on a scale, and the HD product weighed less).

I'm wondering if this is still the case? Should I avoid the big box stores? I'm guessing what I would get at Home Depot would be more or less the same as Wayfair or Amazon....

It's possible. Most everything is made in China, Mexico, or Japan these days anyway, so you never really know.

I do believe that there are different grades/quality of items. The cheaper grades/quality may be picked up by the big box stores. Idk. However, you would never get them to admit that or would they share that information with the general public. Just my opinion.

I know Delta lav faucets from a hardware store feel lighter in construction than the ones from the wholesaler, despite being supposedly the same product. The drain bodies are usually the same.

I haven't noticed a difference in kitchen faucets.

Specific model numbers are exactly the same quality product. Like electronics, faucet and lockset manufacturers sell many different variations of the same products, labeling them with different model numbers. So, inspect the display models of products you are interested in and compare the features and pricing.

I'd avoid cheap fixtures that use plastic internals as much as possible. Maybe go with something like Moen who will stand behind their Chinese made junk and send you free replacement parts or fixtures when they fail.

I saw a bathroom faucet for sale at Wal-"Doh!"-Mart for $16.99.

I'm sure that's of the highest quality.

Moen is manufactured in Mexico. I'm sure they use the top 5 dollar a day labor they can get.
