Default faucet stem removal

I am attempting to remove a faucet stem from a 70 year old shower fixture .After removing the packing nut ,the stem doesnt come out.Inside-a washer can be seen-with a little space around it.I am under the impression that a special tool is needed to pop it out.H-E-L-P

This may sound silly, but, have you tried turning the stem? Most of the older stems had heavy threads and after removing the packing nut, you slip the handle back on and turn it. This usually removes it. Being that old, there may be a heavy build-up of calcium deposits holding it in. Good luck.
