faucet handle won't come off

I'm trying to fix a leaky sink faucet in my bathroom. No name or other identifying marks on it. The handle has a set screw on the side, which I can take off and then the handle will begin to slide up but it won't come off completely. It feels like its hitting a metal stop. There is no screw in the top of the handle. How do I get the handle off?

There's usually more than one set screw. Did you get all of them?

Thanks for the suggestion Ishmael. However, it's not so much that the handle is stuck, but rather that it slides up the shaft and then hits a stop. It actually feels (and sounds) like the stop is metal. I'm wondering if there's something else, other than the set screw on the side, that I'm supposed to be removing.

There are 'Hot' and 'Cold' labels on the handles, which are held down by a ring that screws off. But there's nothing underneath them, like a cap that could be pried off hiding a screw.

Can you post some pictures? Some faucet handles need to be unscrewed at the escutcheon beneath the handle. In other words, the escutcheon and the handle are really one unit that screws down over a knurled spline. Some Moen faucets are like that.

It sort of looks like a Newport Brass faucet, but I don't think it is...

Are there any screws under the porcelain inserts ("hot" & "cold)?

Not that I could find. The 'hot' & 'cold' porcelain pieces are held in place by rings (which screw on & off). Once the pieces are taken off, it appears to just be metal that is part of the handle itself.

I also looked to see if there were some sort of restraining pins, but I couldn't find them either.

See if the bell shaped escutcheon below the handle will unscrew---the handle might be flared into the escutcheon.---Mike---

Did you fully remove the set screw? If not, try that and see if it comes out.

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't yet attempted to unscrew the escutcheon, but once I do remove the set screw on the side, then the handle will slide up the tines such that it is completely free of the escutcheon.

Bob22: yes, I did completely remove the set screw. That allows the handle to move, but as the handle slides up the tines, then it appears to hit this 'stop' towards the top.
