Are faucet assemblies universal?

I haven't bought my new tub-fixtures, yet, and will be doing the plumbing before I buy.

I have the old assembly which I will be replacing - but can I use it as a guide to help me figure out where to place my risers and openings, etc? Or do I need to buy the new fixture, first?

The main thing I think I need to consider is if it'll be a single, double or triple knob assembly - but other than that using the old to cut for the new should be ok?

No, they aren't.

Tub fixtures are the one thing that trips me up - for some reason it seems so foreign and I get lost easily.

you can probably go online and get cutsheets for hole layouts

I need to get the fixture and go from there - there's reall nothing I can do without it because everything depends on the spacing between the risers.

So I'm diverting from plumbing until I get these things and working on other tidbits in the meantime.
