expansion tank location

I am planning on putting an expansion tank in my residential home water system but I am constrained in location close to the water heater. It currently does not have one. How far away in the cold water line can an expansion tank be placed. It would be very convenient to install almost immediately after the pressure reducer at the inlet to the house. This is probably 40 feet as the water flows to the water heater.

That's where mine is for 21 years no problems. Before that the hot water relief valve kept weeping.

An expansion tank can go anywhere in the plumbing system but it is better if the expansion tank is placed so there is no valve of any kind between it and the water heater and also so that anyone inspecting the water heater can see that an expansion tank exists.

Thanks for the responses. I am planning on putting the tank in the convenient spot, which is also easily visible in the basement - different room but will be obvious.
