electrolysis on copper pipe
i recently realized that using galvanized metal tape to suspend copper pipe from joists was bad in that it caused electrolysis. i have corrected the mistake with copper tape since, however, was wondering how bad the damage is and whether it would continue to worsen ? the turquoise corrosions stuff is somewhat visible but not too bad.

It probably isn't going to hurt anything or get worse. If you want to be completely sure, take some sand cloth, steel wool, or fine grit sandpaper and polish the area to a shine removing all the corrosion then wipe it off with a clean rag.

If all the work is complete you can just pad between the strap and the pipe with some plastic or electrical tape, pieces of foam pipe wrap or other seperator. It would probably become a major issue if you live in a very humid environment.

Or use some scrap garden hose sections. Thats what we done when we installed a drop ceiling and the suspension wires (Steel) came into contact with the copper pipe. we cut sections of old hose and placed under the wires that touched the copper tubing.

Sometimes them bristly pot and pan scrubbers that the Mrs uses on dishes works good to clean pipe too!

If you read his post he's already replaced the galvanized with copper so separating the two metals is no-longer and issue. The question at hand is will the existing corrosion cause any damage.
The answer is not likely if it is only light corrosion, but if you're feeling ambitious it won't hurt to remove it.
