Electric Hot Water Heater

Hi, we had a lower element burn out and that in turn( I think) took out the upper thermostat. I have replaced both and checked the upper element (little bit of scale but pretty clean otherwise). This morning I noticed the over temperature breaker had popped and I had to reset it. Does the bottom thermometer usually fail open or closed and could it be causing the temp to get to hot?

We always replace both upper and and lower stats, are you sure you got the wires back on the correct terminals?

A tip on replacing water heater tstats (both as Ron said):
1. Memorize or sketch the exact layout and number of screws on the existing tstats, and get a set exactly like them from the store (does not have to be same brand).
2. Exchange the wires ONE AT A TIME from the old to the new tstats to the corresponding screw.
Can't go wrong like that.
A simple way to test elements is to disconnect all wires and test with an ohm meter. No resistance, replace it.

I had the same problem with my water heater. Replacing both elements and thermostats fixed my problem, even though it was just the bottom element that tested bad. Plumber told me that water was being heated by upper element only which weakened the stat.
