Ejector pump mystery....help

Hi,
My ejector pump will pump out water through a 2 ft. pipe into a 5 gal. bucket...but only stirs up the water when actually connected to the check valve. The check valve seems to be working....easily moves by feel when pipe is disconnected.

This is a typical ejector pump installation. The roughed-in plumbing is there, but the basement is unfinished....only humidifier drips going into floor drain and into the well. The Zoeller 211 quit on me 2 weeks ago, just humming and no pumping, but since then I was able to get it going again by hand turning the impeller and loosening it up. It seemed to work again.

However, when I connected everything up...pump to check valve/shutoff valve combo...the installation that worked..and came with the home...the pump still works, but just churns the water and the level does not decrease in the pit.

Could the pump be weak...i.e. strong enough to pump when disconnected, but too weak to pump the 9ft. head in the hookup to the sewer??

Thanks.

If everything is working as it should and it still won't pump water check for an obstruction in the discharge line outside sometimes calcium can build up and close the line.

Another possibility--the impellers are almost gone--They some times do that--rust or abrasion--

Is there a hole in the side of the riser pipe coming off the pump? sometimes they get clogged, and the pump will airlock trying to pump under a load.

Nothing seems clogged....the pump works when disconnectd from the vertical pipe.... I swap out a 2 ft flex pvc just to empty the pit every week.
The impeller is fine. Could the pump just be weak?

Yes--impellers wear out----

Test your drain pipe with a spare pump---have you removed the back flow valve and inspected that?

Check that it will pump water at the spec'd GPM against a head of a few feet of vertical pipe.
Approximately, pump HP = GPM x Head/2000, GPM = 2000 x HP/head, and Head = 2000 x HP/GPM.
With HP = 3/4 and an 8' head you should get (2000 x 3/4)/8 = 188 GPM which will fill a 5 gal bucket in about two seconds.
Unfortunately, I have no way of trying this.

You could also check current draw to see if it consuming the power you'd expect.

It fills a 5 gal bucket in about 7 seconds.....everything else seems ok, maybe its the pump

As a follow- up....I was able to definetely determine it is a weak pump. I umhooked he pump and attached it to a 8" vertical pvc pipe temporarily.....pump ran, but could not get water to the top of the pipe.

So I will be getting a new pump.

Thanks to all.
