easy water turnoff

What is the easiest way to controll the main water shutoff. I hate turning water off at the meter. If I break something I will be liable for the citys repairs. Is there a super easy way to turn it off, I do turn it off quite often and hate the trek to the meter and the possibility of breaking the meter.

What is the reason it needs to be shut off so often?

Do you have shut-offs at each fixture?

Do you have a shut-off as the water line enters the house (inside)?

I need to replace all the stops inside but only have time for a little at a time so I am doing small things a little at a time.
The only shut off is at the street. there is pipe coming up into home underneath but no shutoff and that would be hard to go under the house every time as well.

Why do you think you will break the shutoff? If it is free turning and you have done it before there is no reason to worry. They are not cheap valves.

Min...I hear where he's coming from. Some valves seem so tight you think that the handle is going to break!

Thank you, ball valve would be best but I don't want to crawl under the house to turn on/off. all plumbing is under the house. The meter valve is very stiff. If I call the water company, they will tell me not to play with the valve on their side and make me install a valve on my side of the meter. I was just looking to see if anyone had an easier way. Thank you all.

there is an easier way, install a ball valve, and use that to shut the house off

Install a valve before it goes into the house or rout the main from under the house up into a closet or garage, install valve then back down again before the first branch line.

A. Get a T-shaped meter key that fits your meter for just a few bucks at almost any hardware or big box store. You can turn a meter off safely and very easily with one of these stand-up tools.
B. As suggested, install an easy-to-reach 1/4-turn ball valve in your main line up inside your home in a utility room, cabinet or closet.
C. If you don't have one, also install a ball valve on the cold water supply side of your water heater just to isolate the hot water side of your supply system.
Good Luck!
Mike
