DW distance from Sink

We are in the planning stages of a kitchen remodel. Currently our dishwasher is adjacent to our sink (picture an "L" our sink sits on one length and then the dishwasher on the other). There is an 18" drawer space for access to water lines. The current set up has the DW draining into its own pvc drain. (It is not connected to the garabage disposal). I am struggling with 2 options.
1.) Keep the DW as is and run the drain into a new garabage disposal, providing that this distance is acceptable.
2.) Move the dishwasher next to the sink, which makes me have to move our peninsula 6" farther into an eat in space, tear up existing tile, and deal with the hassle of moving electric, plumbing, etc.

Can it stay as is, or should it be moved closer to sink?

I'm not a pro plumber, just a long-time DIYer.
I see no reason why you can't leave the dw where it is and connect the drain hose to a disposal.
Just make sure that you install an air gap if one is required now by your local code, or loop the drain hose over the top of the dw before running it to the disposal. A dw pump should be fine at this short distance.
Good Luck!
Mike
