There's lots of things you can do to help keep that basement dry.
Working gutters with drain far from the foundation.
Regrading so it runs away from the house.
No mulch pilled up againt the foundation.
No flower beds forming ponds for water to lay.
in my neck of the woods in northeast Ohio, most cities require schedule 35 4" pvc pipe for footer drains. It's strong enough to not have to worry about crushing. Check on the ideas Joe mentioned and see if they apply to your situation. Try the easy things first.
