Drain pipes in slab

how deep are drain pipes in the slab typically? Do they run horizontally in the slab, or below the slab and only comes up vertically at the connection point?

I am doing a bathroom remodel and the is charging a lot to do the concrete work. So I'm thinking about renting a jackhammer and doing the trenching myself, but I wanna make sure i don't hit a drain pipe. Any tips on locating the drain pipe without one of those fancy cameras?
