The plumber was here this morning.
The diagnosis is that the old toilet (kohler) has to go.He reamed this one out twice, and it didn't help, know's we've had it off for a look see, etc.
That's fine with me, but I really want another same brand. He doesn't like them, and recommends Champion? Never heard of it, but oh well, We'll have a look. He said that since we are capable of installing it ourselves, that there's no reason to put me on the schedule for that.

It's not in the drain pipes. etc etc etc.

THEN if a new unit doesn't fix the problem for me to call the office Monday morning, he will come back on Tuesday morning and ream out the roof vent.

That is too bad as Kohler's are what most plumbers
I know use and I have used in over 25 apartment units of my own to eliminate aggravation.

On the other hand if your plumber has evidence that champions will cure the problem, then that's good.

I haven't had any luck with American standard toilets (Champion) or any other American standard toilets since they went to the water savers.
American standards are the ones we got rid of in our apartments.

Here is a funny story that happened to my neighbor.

He came to see me to borrow my soil pipe reamer.
He has a clog and wants to do it himself and I don't mind. He is a trusted friend.

He comes back an hour later laughing and giggling about how things went.

As he started reaming from the toilet he got stuck. After loosening the auger he thinks he sees a leg of a bird in the toilet. So He grabs and wiggles and forced out a drowned crow. Needless to say, his toilet was clogged with a bird that fell down the soil pipe and some how climbed to within inches of freedom only to be drowned in the trap.

On another note I have seen frost and ice clog a roof vent that made the toilets in the house all flush funny, like they were burping.

I don't think much of the Champions (made by American standard). They have a non-standard flush valve that has been known to cause problems. Maybe they have it cleared up by now, but it can be next to impossible to get parts for them.

My personal favorite is the Toto drake. I have 4 of them in my house, each about 2-3 years old. So far, my 14 year old daughter and several of her friends haven't been able to clog one yet. They're pretty spendy though.

If you get one, get rid of the factory installed red flapper, and put a blue one in. Lowes stocks them. With the blue flapper, it'll use a bit more than 1.6 gallons per flush, but the flush is quite a bit stronger.

Of course, you can expect a visit from the toilet police for violating congresses mandate of lousy flushing toilets! lol. Seriously, the blue flapper uses very little more water, but I think it's worth it.

I'm in agreement there.

Toto toilets do work well in my experience too.

Z,
Heres some info. Kohler in my area today released a new Wellworth redesigned with an 850 gram flush rating and a 3" valve. The originals until this year were a 2" valve and a 250 gram rating at the bottom of today's standards. Apparently some brands are rated for 1000grams or 2.2 lbs...........OOOOH

There are no retrofit kits.

In my travels to the attic this weekend I have determined my ensuite which has been mostly problem free and sits midaway in venting and drainage, is vented through a 3" stack within 2 ' while the others are vented through 2" stacks tieing into the main at least 15' upline.

Unless a pro tells me otherwise I have to believe there is also a strong connection between the smaller venting and my blockage issues similar to opening the vent part way or fully on a gas can while pouring. Anyway the new Kohler valve seems to make good sense like a 3" funnel versus a 2".
