Diverter valve does not extend far enough past surround to install chateau knob-help?

On a very tight budget, this is my first time doing this stuff, and I replaced my 30 yr old shower surround (drywall w/ layer of tile and a glue on surround on top) with a new direct to stud fiberglass unit. The fiberglass unit ended up being about 3/8" to 1/2" "deeper" than the old stack of surrounds.

I'm trying to reuse the existing diverter valve due to a lack of funds, but the diverter valve is only about 5 years old and still good.

Currently the end of the valve sits flush with the surround unit, and I need it to stick out about 3/8" (is there a rule of thumb?) or so in order for my current "chateau handle" to bolt to it. Is there a different style of handle or any sort of "diverter valve extender" I can buy, or am I stuck paying a plumber to come solder in a new valve/pipes? I can post a picture of my shower if it will help answer the question?
