Dishwasher Shooting Water!

Hi! My husband replaced our kitchen sink almost a year ago and since then, the pipe that is connected to the dishwasher has been shooting out water. I don't know what the pipe is called, so I don;t know what to search for online (nor does my husband).

There is one pipe that runs from the dishwasher, go up to a tube that looks like it should be blocking the water, then run through the garbage disposal. Maybe the disposal is clogged and making the water shoot too hard?? But I havent had an visible problems w the disposal...

I drew a picture and attached it. Please help me figure out what to do so I dont have to live with bowls under my sink forever!

Thanks!

That is called an air gap, and water coming out of that usually indicates a slow drain downstream. Likely spots are the trap, or where the drain goes into the wall elbow.

yes, you have a restriction on the drain side of the air gap. if you can, disconnect the drain and put it over in the sink. you may have to add some kind of line temporarily but this will tell you where the restiction is. if it works fine and doesn't leak at the air gap, then the problem is not in the dw line. if your drain goes into a garbage disposal look at the connection there first. most times i can see the blockage right there. i have seen plumbers not knock the dw knockout at the disposal out good. this is a little plug in the disposal you have to knockout if you want to drain the dw into the disposal. make sure it was knocked out completely. does your sink drain slow? if it does, there's your problem. thanks, buddy builder

also tape up the disposal where you disconnected it for the test/ and you might just try it in a five gallon bucket. you can always open the door or hit the off button if you get too much water. also visually look for kinks in the line. you have a restriction somewhere. bb

It is an Air Gap. Disconnect the two hoses at the unit and look for blockage. You could start by removing the Air Gap cover and looking inside it also.

THIS IS A VERY ! VERY ! COMMON MISTAKE !

WHEN YOU PUT THE NEW SINK AND GARBAGE DISPOSER ? ? INSTALLED

YOU SIMPLE FORGOT TO KNOCK OUT THE DRAIN PLUG IN THE DISPOSER

INLET, THIS INSIDE THE LITTLE TUBE ON THE SIDE OF DISPOSER OR YOU HAVE A KINK IN THE HOSE BETWEEN THE AIRGAP AND THE DISPOSER DRAIN !

I HAVE SEEN THIS DONE HUNDREDS OF TIMES OVER THE YEARS !

SOMETIMES EVEN BY PLUMBERS !

Visually, there were no kinks in both lines. We removed the lines from the air gap and checked for blockages. Nothing found.

There are holes in the top of the air gap... do we need to reseal this with a cap that has no holes?

NO ! !
THEY ARE REQUIRED !

READ VERY SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY WHAT I POSTED EARLIER;

REMOVE THE DISCHARGE HOSE FROM THE DISPOSER STICK "ONE" LITTLE

FINGER INSIDE ! ! IF YOU FEEL A PLUG THATS YOUR PROBLEM !

TAKE A HAMMER AND A SCREW DRIVER AND KNOCK IT OUT ! ! !

BE SURE TO REACH INSIDE THE DISPOSER AFTER WARDS AND REMOVE FROM
THE GRIND CHAMBER

PART ONE

THE REASON THESE COME THIS WAY IS "NOT" EVERY HOUSEHOLD OR USAGE HAS A NEED FOR A DISHWASHER CONNECTION AT THIS POINT ! !
