Dishwasher plumbing mystery

I am replacing my dishwasher. I turned off the hot water supply. It is the one to which the copper supply line to the dishwasher is connected. Why would water flow from the supply line when I turn on the cold water tap? The copper line is not connected to the cold water line.

If the line to the dishwasher doesn’t connect directly to a shut-off valve, but connects to the hot water pipe above the valve (between the valve and the faucet), turning the cold water on at the sink faucet can backfeed into the hot water side on some faucets.

Welcome Cathi to the best darn DIY'r site on the web.

Sure sounds like you have a cross connect somewhere on that DW feed line.

if you have a single handled faucet and you open it up in the "warm" position the water will cross through the faucet and come out the supply on the hot side. is the dishwasher on the same shutoff as the faucet? if you have a 2 handle faucet make sure the hot side is turned off.
