Dishwasher Install re: How to turn off hot water

Hi Everyone,

I have a 5/8 compression x 3/8 x 38 water shut off valve I plan on installing tonight so I can hook up the hot water line from dishwasher and also the kitchen sink faucet.

Before I start, I have a question on how I should shut off the hot water before I cut into the 1/2" copper pipe for the new water shut off compression fitting.

Would it be OK if I shut off the water outlet which is located directly above the hot water heater. I would not touch the cold water inlet as this would still be on.

Underneath the kitchen sink on main level is a washroom in the basement, I would open this hot water tap to drain the water from above hot water lines.

Always wondered what the best way to work on the hot water lines of a system, and if you should close the hot water outlet or cold water inlet connected to the gas tank before starting to do any work.

My logic is if I turn the hot water outlet, this is no different then all the taps in the system being closed.

Thanks SHR Plumber, always worried about shutting down a valve off the hot water tank heater.

For whatever reason, always have in the back of my head a fear that if I turn a valve off from the hot water tank heater while doing some work the tank is going to explode on me.

Sometimes worry to much I suppose.

May I suggest you shut off the water at the meter?

If you have single handled faucets ,you might get some cross over when you attempt to drain the pipes---If you have old fashioned gate valves---be careful--they often go bad---if there is a ball valve at the main--use that---

SHR Plumber, very true! Caution is a good thing! LOL.

I am headed home to get this dishwasher hooked up finally, hot water is the last step as everything else is done and wanted to double check before I start closing valves.

oh' mike...thanks for the heads up! I will make sure I close the cold water shut off valve under the sink to ensure things don't loop around the single faucet head. I believe they are newer style valves on the water tank as it is newer. Will double check.

Good plan---I always just shut off the main ----never just the hot water valve---

It should work---so do what ever is easiest for you---
