Dishwasher Drain

Our dishwasher drain hose goes into a separate pipe w/o a p-trap then we have the main drain pipe w/ 2 sinks and disposal hooked to it. This separate pipe must be clogged as there is water spewing out when I use the dishwasher - any ideas why there is a separate pipe and why isn't there a p-trap - actually not sure how it could be clogged as nothing but the dishwasher water goes to it.

Can you supply a pic?
The pressure coming out of the dw discharge is what may be causing the water to come back out of the drain.
one way to do it.........

First of all don't you smell sewer gas when you open the dw? Secondly how well do you rinse you dishes or clean the sump in the dw? It may be that the debris from your dishes is clogging the drain line.
