Dishwasher air gap question

When installing an air gap I know the dishwasher drain hose goes to the air gap inlet and the outlet goes to a branch on the drain line or a disposal. My question is how does water from the dishwasher going to travel uphill to reach the air gap?

Dishwasher air gap question

The water in a dishwasher doesn't drain, it's pumped out.
